Preserve Your Memories

Last Christmas I was searching through old photos of my mom and I to restore and frame to give to her as a gift. I found some gems. Like pictures of her in college and of me as a chubby baby roaming through the house, much like I take of my own kids that have become some of my favorite photos. I literally could have sat there for hours reminiscing about being a kid, and later having my mom tell me stories of exactly what was happening when each photo was taken. Some of my favorite weekends spent together with my family are when we look through pictures, laughing and talking about how crazy it is that time has gone by so fast.

I want to leave those memories for my kids, and especially for you.

It’s so important to have tangible memories, which is why every family session includes a keepsake box and prints, as well as a USB drive of your digital photos so you always have a way to keep printing your family’s memories. The best of both worlds!

“I wish I had realized that family history is a perishable commodity. It disappears with time, as memories fade, and as loved ones pass on. I wish I had known the most important aspect of family history is preserving a record of the present for the future.”- Guy Black

The Flug Family | Phoenix, Arizona Documentary Family Photographer

There’s nothing quite as exciting as Christmas time and sessions documenting families making memories make my heart so happy! Christmas pj’s, pillow fights, and dancing on the kitchen counter while helping mom and dad make breakfast. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Ashley is a local photographer and wanted me to capture them making breakfast so they had some pictures to hang in their kitchen. How cool is that? Thank you for choosing me to tell just a piece of your story. All weekends should be filled with love & laughter like this one!

My Arrows

Psalm 127:3-5

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them…

In July (after taking multiple pregnancy tests) we found out we were expecting baby number three. First was shock. How am I going to be mom to one more, when I feel like I am barely making it with two? Then there was disbelief. This is surreal. This can’t be in the plan, right? Then came the first ultrasound with the whole family in tow. That’s when it became real, and I finally became accepting. I know that can seem harsh, especially since I have suffered through miscarriages and infertility. It’s not easy.

Then I was reminded of this verse and everything changed. Life is crazy beautiful, even within the chaos. I know there will be times where I will feel like I’m not going to make it. When I want to give up. When I am overwhelmed. But aren’t we all at times? And we all make it.

I can’t wait to meet little Bubbles (named by Sophia), and start making even more memories. And I still can’t believe my youngest is now going to be a big brother to a little BOY!

Welcoming Baby Kabil | Phoenix, AZ Documentary Family Photographer

One of my most favorite things about documentary photography is being able to capture the honest, real-life moments when families are feeling the most connected. It is within these little moments where I find my magic and I love it. Those moments of welcoming a baby home are no different.

This amazingly talented mama is a photographer here in Phoenix and I’m so grateful to call her friend. Congratulations to this sweet and beautiful new family of four!

When asking if there was anything she felt she wanted to say, she said these words that couldn’t be more true:

“After having two little ones, I’ve realized just how important and sacred the first 40 days postpartum are. My grandmother stresses that it is important for us to be still because our body needs to heal. So that means no chores or too much movement. Even if we think we are fine and strong (which we are! There’s no doubt about that!) Just rest. Ask someone else to take care of the home and just let go. You’ll never get this recovery time again and you’ll never get these precious moments back. Your body and your heart will be grateful.”

The Boyd Family Day in the Life | Wittmann, AZ Documentary Family Photographer

For every session I always ask what the story is behind WHY you want to book a session. It’s such a simple question, but it really makes you think about why capturing these photos are important.

For the Boyd family, they wanted to capture this new time in their lives in their new forever dream home with their daughter. When chatting with Grace she said,

“I love life. I love everyday and I want to just capture pure emotion and love.”

I think it’s important to let you know a few things before photographing your family. Ground rules, if you will 🙂

1.) I will become a fly on the wall and photograph you in your element. Capturing the love, genuine emotion, and what makes you thrive as a family. I will also encourage snuggles, and run around with your kids.

2.) I want to capture what’s REAL. That means I won’t ask you to look at me and smile, or pose you in awkward poses. The heart of your session is YOU, and telling your story through photographs. It’s perfectly okay if no one is looking at the camera, in fact, that is even better!

3.) My passion is storytelling and capturing emotion. I want to make you feel something. With that being said, if posed memories are what you are looking for, then I probably am not the photographer for you and that is okay! But, if you trust me enough and let the “perfection” guard down I promise you your session will not lack emotions, memories, and pure love.

This is an incredible example of a family who trusted me with their story, and that is when sessions like this happen. Can you can see the genuine emotion and feel the love between this family? This is why I do what I do, and I hope you can see it now to..
